Preliminary results from the LongGold study show that many adolescents believe their musical abilities are mainly a matter of talent and cannot be changed. This so-called fixed mindset (vs. growth mindset) has negative consequences on musical activity, academic performance in music, and, more general, how children deal with new challenges.
This is where the TOMTE project group (Theory of Musicality for Teaching and Evaluation) comes in, having developed a new teaching unit that promotes a growth mindset in music education. Currently, all teaching materials are available in German only, but an English translation is currently being developed. More information about the content of the teaching unit and how to participate in the project can be found here on the website of the Max-Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt am Main.
